Firearms Safety & Training: A Foundation of Responsible Gun Ownership

Safety is the core of responsible gun ownership and education is where the foundation of safe gun ownership all begins.  The majority of all accidents can be prevented with proper education and training.  Whether you are new to firearms or an experienced shooter, a strong foundation in this knowledge is crucial.  In this blog, we will explain the significance of firearms safety and talk about the course that we offer at Scot’s to start your education process.  We will also provide useful resources to help you on your journey to becoming a competent, knowledgeable and safe firearms owner.

Responsible gun ownership starts with understanding the importance of  firearms safety.  The correct handling and storage of guns is crucial to ensuring  the safety of your family members, friends and self.

When working with firearms, there are two things that we must be concerned with: safety and storage.  Knowing how to properly handle and store guns involves with becoming familiar with your firearms specific features, mechanisms, and following the manufacturer’s safety guidelines.  Improper handling and storage can lead to accidents that can have tragic and deadly outcomes.  In order to achieve the goals listed above, muzzle awareness and trigger finger discipline are the two most critical concepts to keep in mind.

The 4 Primary Rules of Firearms Safety

  1. Muzzle Awareness- always keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction.
  2. Trigger finger discipline- keep your finger off of the trigger until you are ready to shoot the weapon.
  3. Treat all guns as though they are loaded and know the status of all of your firearms.
  4. Always be sure to identify your target and its surroundings.
